Just a little caution on CFL’s in general. They are made using the element Mercury. If one of these bulbs breaks, it’s going to cost you a small fortune to get the mercury cleaned out of your house. If you have small children, don’t put these bulbs in any place that might be in danger of being broken. Sure they’ll save you money on your light bill and the companies make you think you’re saving the planet, but you’re hurting it really. In 5 years, when these bulbs start to burn out, our landfills will be full of mercury. I wonder what the autism rates will be by then?

Harry Shearer (voice from the Simsons):

I tried to ordered the his new comedy songs CD and thought the light bulbs were included for pressing a certain ‘trial offer’ button. Normally Amazon isn’t so confusing to use.

I have used these bulbs a few times before and can tell you that they are horrible options for lighting.

    Good:

    *Save money on power

    Bad:

*Poor lighting compared to incandescent, this is the same as office lighting, only you get the flickering dull light in the convenience of your own home.

*They can last about half the time as incandescents, so that money you save in power you are paying in buying new ones.

*They contain Mercury, as in the liquid metal. You are not supposed to throw these in the trash, they NEED to be taken to a recycling center to remove the mercury. I imagine most will not do this and just throw them in the trash…so now we have a ton of mercury in the ground.

*These do NOT work with dimmer switches, so if you want these to set the romantic mood in your bedroom or dining room you will just see a strobe light until it explodes.

If you really care about the environment, which is probably why you are looking at these, then keep the incandescents or look into LED lights. They use less power than fluorescents and put out a whiter light.

These “swell” Al Gore CFL bulbs are a questionable purchase, whether they will be mandated in the future or not. What is the payoff time that one would have to use these things to realize a savings over the tried and true regular old incandescent bulb? Also, is the premium price paid for these bulbs going somewhere to mitigate their environmental hazard when they are disposed of? They do contain evil old Mercury ya know.

Also, who is setting up a healthcare program for the little fellahs in China and other third world countrys whose labor produces these bulbs? Oh, you haven’t heard about the negative health affects on the assemblers of the bulbs? You should learn to read. I suggest getting an incandescent bulb to light up your computer room and doing a bit of research on this proud product of the mind numbed moronic syncophants of the environmental movement.

I also suggest stocking up on good ole regular incandescents to use when they become like freon. Priced a can of “real” freon lately? A person could have gotten quite wealthy had he purchased large lots of Freon back in the 80s simply by selling that fantastic product on todays market.

If you have bought into the CFL craze, when the bulbs fail one might suggest placing them in a weighted box and depositing same into whatever source supplies Al Gores water supply. Drink hearty Al!! You Putz!

CF bulbs CANNOT be just thrown away. They MUST be treated as toxic waste. Will everyone remember? Is “Toxic” the new “Green”? No, not really. We are just trading one problem (high energy consumption) for another (toxic pollution of our watershed).

I hate working under fluorescents, and would rather live in the dark than populate my house with cold, 60Hz flickering light.
